Starters

Cambridge YLE tests are designed for young school-age children taking their first steps in English.
The exam has three levels (Starters, Movers, Flyers) and Starters is the first in this series. Many parents have found that these exams increase children's motivation to learn English. At the same time, by taking the exam children gain valuable experience of sitting international exams. Every child who takes the exam, without exception, receives a certificate reflecting their knowledge on an international scale.
Primary-school children who have only recently started learning English and want to test their knowledge, as well as gain an international certificate matching their level, can take this exam.
Interactive, engaging exam tasks let children improve their English and motivate them to keep learning, while building confidence in their abilities.
On the international scale the exam level is A1 (Basic/Beginner). Recommended for children aged 7 and up.

- Listening consists of 4 parts and 20 questions. For example, following instructions, children match a word to a picture, write in a word or number, or choose or find the right picture.
- Reading and Writing consists of 5 parts and 25 questions. Tasks may include matching a picture to a sentence, forming a word from letters, or filling in given words in a text.
- Speaking consists of 5 parts. In an informal chat with the examiner, the child answers simple questions about pictures, and then about themselves, their family, school, and so on.
Every child who takes the exam receives a certificate. Results are shown as scores from 1 to 5 in each area, shown as shields, with a maximum of 15. If a child scores 10 or 11 shields, they're ready for the next level, Movers (YLE Movers).
