Denmark is called the green pearl of Scandinavia. It's one of the most advanced countries in developing modern technology, ecology and renewable energy use. Denmark pioneered commercial wind power, and today Danish companies Vestas and Siemens Wind Power remain market leaders in wind turbines. 35% of the country's energy needs are met by alternative energy.
Denmark outranks many countries on quality-of-life indices and has repeatedly been named the happiest country. This is thanks in part to its established democratic system, considered one of the oldest in the world. Strong traditions of equality and equal opportunity for all exist here, regardless of gender, religion, age or nationality.
Denmark has been ruled by kings and queens for more than a thousand years. The current monarch of the Kingdom of Denmark is Queen Margrethe II, who has reigned since 1972. Although her role is constitutionally purely representative and ceremonial, this doesn't stop her from publicly expressing her fairly clear views on various social issues.
Denmark has one of the world's best free healthcare systems and an excellent public transport network. Bicycles are hugely popular among Danes, and today there are twice as many bicycles as cars in the country. Danes cycle in any weather and at any time of year.
Modern Denmark is a country offering quality education that meets the highest international standards. For a population of 5 million, there are 13 Nobel laureates, one of the highest rates in the world. Students who come here from various countries value the standard of teaching, the wide choice of English-language programmes, the international environment, and opportunities for internships at local businesses and subsequent employment.
